It was Sunday afternoon, Sept. 14, when Toby Pass, a young man way up in north Georgia was watching TV.  The Atlanta Falcons’ game was over, so he grabbed his remote and began to channel surf.  Unexpectedly, he picked up Houston KHOU-11.  The coverage was exclusively given to the widespread and devastating effects of Hurricane Ike, which made landfall late Friday night, Sept. 12.  Toby flipped channels back and forth a few times before finding himself glued to this Houston station.  That was all he watched the rest of the afternoon.
The longer he watched, the more he wondered what he could do to help.  He had to face facts: he was just a young husband struggling to make a decent living for his wife and Text Box: two children.  What could he possibly do that would make a substantial difference for the hundreds of thousands of Ike victims?  Maybe he couldn’t do much, but he surely could do something.  He picked up the phone and called Robin, the pianist at his home church, the New Echota United Methodist Church in Calhoun, Georgia.  
The two of them began to envision a pick-up truck and a U-haul loaded down with water, and maybe some food.  They figured their small church, with an average attendance of 30-40, would get behind this project and help make it happen.  Within days, church members were not only talking it up amongst themselves, but also with other folks out in the community.  Donations of all kinds began to pour in.  Cases and cases of water, canned goods galore, over-the-counter medicines, hundreds of blankets, loads of hygiene Text Box: items, cleaning supplies, mops, brooms, tents, cots, tarps, and last but not least, CLOTHES!
A friend of Robin’s, who didn’t attend her church, asked how they would transport all those goods.  Her response was, “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”  The man asked her to wait a

Text Box: Lots of info to pass on this month, so let's get started---
Elected officers for 2009 are: President-Lucille Lavallee, Vice President-Terry Cobden, Secretary-Linda Burke, Treasurer-Judy Shostak and Chair of Nominating Committee-Phyllis Rollins.
Our unit voted to change the time of our monthly meetings to 2:00 PM.  We will continue to meet on the fourth Thursday of each month in The Gathering Place.
Hold on---there are two Text Box: exceptions already.  In November we will meet on Wednesday the 19th at 2:00 PM (our new time).  You probably guessed--the fourth Thursday is Thanksgiving Day.  Also there will be a Christmas party on Tuesday, December 16, at 7:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall instead of a regular meeting.  More about this next month.
Attention all bakers!  On November 8 (ORT's Fall Festival) baked goods are needed as well as cakes for the CAKE WALK!  Be sure to Text Box: label your donations (brownies with pecans, yellow cake with chocolate icing, peanut butter cookies, etc.).  Most people have a sweet tooth, and our goal is to tempt each one!
